This article presents a scripto-linguistic analysis of a set of texts produced in Galicia between c. 1225 and 1254, read directly from original manuscripts, which exhibit various degrees of approximation to the fully Romance and Galician spelling that was adopted generally by the end of the thirteenth century. This study considers two scripto-linguistic facets of the transition process that led to the emergence of Mediaeval Galician spelling by examining both the graphemic level and the strictly linguistic level. The most important aspects taken into account in this analysis are: 1) degree of either Latin-Galician or inter-Romance interlectalism (phenomena of linguistic interference, alternation and code-mixing), 2) progressive autonomy of the phono-graphic-based Romance graphemic system, and 3) congruent choice of typical Galician linguistic variants (as opposed to peripheral ones). In terms of these criteria we will distinguish the following types of transitional spelling: a) heteronomous Galician-Latin spelling, b) semi-heteronomous Galician-Latin spelling, c) semi-autonomous Galician, d) autonomous ‘typical’, e) peripheral and border Galician, f) inter-Romance with alternation or interference. The present study focuses on stages a, b and c which are central to the transition process and which are characterised in terms of the aforementioned criteria.
