摘要：A propósito do caso particular de uma carta do século XVII que um marinheiro que naufragou na Índia escreveu a sua mulher, argumenta-se neste artigo a favor do investimento na recolha e edição maciça de manuscritos antigos que testemunhem o discurso da gente comum. Tal documentação serve ao estudioso da mudança linguística para completar, em termos de tipologia textual, os dados que o discurso literário e institucional lhe oferece. Igualmente, é documentação que serve ao historiador da cultura para abordar a táctica criadora e fracturante adoptada pela gente vulgar na sua vida quotidiana. Finalmente, o tratamento de tal documentação segundo técnicas fi lológicas permite reflectir sobre a vantagem de a crítica textual assumir alguma plasticidade perante diferentes textos, diferentes públicos e diferentes meios de edição. Ao longo do artigo apresenta-se também um projecto de investigação, o projecto CARDS, que cumpre o programa de abordar certos objectos textuais —cartas manuscritas portuguesas anteriores a 1900—editando-os electronicamente sob forma tão anotada que permita a construção de múltiplas hipóteses de compreensão do homem comum na sua relação com a cultura, o tempo e a linguagem. As cartas surgem de uma campanha de recolha junto de arquivos judiciais. São editadas em linguagem compatível com todos os tipos de processamento (mecânico e humano), são fi lologicamente preparadas para leitores com diferentes interesses, contextualizadas mediante recurso à documentação que as rodeia e anotadas por historiadores e linguistas.
其他摘要：A 17th century private letter, written to his wife by a sailor who had escaped from a shipwreck in India, is taken here as a case-study. The idea is to build an argument for the archive search and massive edition of old manuscripts linked to the discourse of ordinary people. Such documentation is a useful tool for language historians since it belongs to a textual genre different from the literary and institutional data normally available for the study of language change. Cultural historians may likewise fi nd the data useful for the study of creative and destructive tactics practised by ordinary people in everyday life. Finally, the philological treatment of such documentation allows one to ponder the capacity of textual criticism to deal with different texts, different readerships and different modes of publication. This paper also serves to present a research project: CARDS, Cartas Desconhecidas - Unknown Letters, which aims to offer both academic and lay audiences an electronic edition of Portuguese private letters written before 1900. The edition is also a tagged corpus, so that various hypotheses emerging from its reading can be tested, especially concerning the ways ordinary men and women relate to culture, historical time and language issues. The letters are extracted from paper fi les in court archives being screened in an ongoing project. The editing protocol followed is compatible with both human and machine processing, while philological analysis of the texts takes into account the expected interests of different target audiences The documents are also contextualized within the micro-historical setting in which they were originally produced, and labelled with linguistic and historiographical keywords.
