摘要：La elaboración de geografías es una tarea fundamental en cualquier acción de conquista de nuevos territorios. En el caso del Lago de Maracaibo y golfo de Venezuela, la cartografía temprana y las relaciones de los primeros exploradores reportan imágenes contrastantes, donde la península de la Guajira fue representada como isla.Aesto hay que añadir el contraste entre diferentes fecha de entrada en lago de Maracaibo y el problema del fechado del primer mapa americano, el Portulano de Juan de la Cosa. Todos estos elementos llevan a estudiar nuevamente los datos para enfocar mejor los eventos de la primera llegada de los españoles a la región lacustre.

In the case of Lake Maracaibo and The Gulf of Venezuela, early cartography and accounts of the first explorers report different images, in which the Guajira Peninsula was represented as an island. It is necessary to add to this differentiation, the contrast between the different different entry dates into Lake Maracaibo and the date on one of the first American maps, the Portulano of Juan de la Cosa. All these elements should be studied again in order to better focus the events related to the first arrival of the Spanish in the lake region.
