摘要：La concepción de la enfermedad mental no ha sido un significante incólume en la cultura. Por el contrario, un seguimiento en diversos contextos históricos la muestra rodeada de otros significantes como locura, vagabundo, encierro, corrección, sanación, etcétera. No fue sino hasta la llegada de la noción de salud mental que otros significantes como los de inclusión social y reconocimiento de derechos como ser humano aparecieron. Podría pensarse entonces que la concepción de la enfermedad mental ha mutado de acuerdo a un espacio-tiempo específico marcado así mismo por otros hechos específicos, y que también ha estado sujeta a un Discurso que deviene del Otro. Estas reflexiones apuntan a que la enfermedad mental puede descansar en una angustia, signo de deseo: una angustia ante la falta. Todo esto en la medida en que aún están los sujetos sin razón, y que las medidas interventivas, normativas y legislativas resultan no ser los suficientemente efectivas de cara al denominado enfermo mental. De esta manera van dejando en el Otro -porque no- un vacío, algo que se escapa, algo que le falta. Lo cual lleva consigo la instauración de otros significantes que permitan otra concepción de lo que es enfermedad mental y salud mental.
