摘要：Desde finales del siglo XIX la poliomielitis comenzó a comportarse como una enfermedad epidemica con gran importancia para la salud pública. Con la disponibilidad de vacunas efectivas para prevenir la enfermedad desde mediados del siglo XX, los países de la Región Europea de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) comenzaron a implementar programas de vacunación con un importante impacto en la incidencia de la enfermedad. La Asamblea Mundial de la Salud adoptó, en mayo de 1988, la resolución para la erradicación mundial de poliovirus y estableció los mecanismos para supervisar los progresos en las diferentes Regiones. Este artículo repasa brevemente la historia de la poliomielitis en la Región Europea, el proceso de certificación y mantenimiento, las estrategias para la erradicación y la situación actual en la Región Europea y en el mundo. La Región Europea de la OMS está libre de poliomielitis desde su certificación en el año 2002. Sin embargo, en el mundo existen todavía tres países endémicos y varios países que utilizan vacunas atenuadas, el riesgo de reintroducción y la aparición de brotes de poliomielitis existe, por lo que es necesario asegurar altas coberturas de vacunación y unos sistemas de vigilancia de calidad.
其他摘要：Poliomyelitis was considered an important event for the public health sin- ce the end of XIX century when this disease became epidemic.As soon as vac- cines were available member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the European Region started to implement vaccination programmes against polio with an important impact in the incidence in this disease. In May 1988, the World HealthAssembly resolution for the global eradication of poliomye- litis was adopted and the mechanisms to oversee the progress in the different WHO Regions were established. This article briefly reviews the history of polio in the WHO European Region, the process for certification and maintenance, the strategies for eradi- cation and the current situation in the European Region and globally. The European Region was certified polio-free in 2002. Nevertheless, there are still three endemic countries in the world, some others use live attenuated vaccines as wellas countries in the Horn of Africa are recently sufferingthe reintroduction of wild poliovirus. Considering these circumstances, the risk of reintroduction of poliovirus and the generation of outbreaks in the European Region exists, therefore high vaccination coverage against polio and good quality surveillance systems are needed to be guaranteed in every member state.
