摘要：O artigo tece relações entre a trajetória de Capistrano de Abreu em busca de um lugar para si mesmo, num espaço social determinado, e sua trajetória em busca do Brasil e dos brasileiros. O objetivo é compreender a questão proposta por Capistrano acerca da formação do Brasil, considerando o vínculo entre historiografia e etnografia no final do século XIX.
