摘要：El presente trabajo analiza las diferentes metamorfosis que experimenta el Self en la modernidad occidental. La reforma protestante, con su inequívoca apuesta por el libre examen, crea un tipo de personalidad total que va a dar sentido a su vida desde dentro, printero pactando con Dios para luego metamorfosear tal pacto en pacto con el diablo. Desencantamiento y encantamiento, como han advertido Max Weber y Thomas Mann, no son sino las dos caras de un mismo proceso social, dos instancias que se correfieren y cuya separación mutila una interpretacibn cabal de la contextura temporal que se proyecta como horizonte de comprensión y de acción del self protomodemo, moderno y en última instancia posmoderno. El final del siglo xut y los comienzos del siglo xx dibujan un perfil de la identidad cuya dirección no procede de su interior sino que vuelve, como había pasado con el Selftradicional, a estar determinado por el afuera, esta v a dirigido por los otros, como se puede ver a través de la obra de autores como Sirnmel, Riesrnan, Poe, Baudelaire, Benjamin, Kafka, Bernhard y Musil.
