摘要：Este artigo objetivou conhecer as dificuldades enfrentadas pelo cuidador familiar mediante o paciente com o Mal de Alzheimer (MA) em fase avançada. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa de campo com abordagem qualitativa onde utilizou a história oral de vida. Entrevistou-se ¿Rosa¿, esposa e cuidadora de "João". Utilizou-se uma questão norteadora: "O que significa para você cuidar de uma pessoa com MA?". Após a leitura e transcrição das falas de "Rosa", dividiu-se o estudo em 03 categorias: o início e a progressão da doença, onde se evidenciou a dificuldade em reconhecer e entender o MA; o sofrimento do cuidador, que se depara com a progressão do MA e dos cuidados prestados; e o confronto de sentimentos que afloram do cuidador, como o medo, a angústia, a dedicação e a esperança. Concluiu-se que há uma sobrecarga de atividades para os cuidadores e que para a assistência aos portadores de MA seja de qualidade é necessária informações sobre a doença e suporte familiar, terapêutico, psicológico.
其他摘要：The objective of this article was to know the difficulties faced by the familiar caretaker of a patient with Alzheimer Disease (AD) in advanced stage. It was performed a qualitative research and it was used the verbal history of life. We interviewed "Rosa", wife and caretaker of "João". The question that directed the study was: "What does it mean to take care of a person with AD?" After the reading and transcription of Rosa¿s speech, the article was divided in 03 categories: the beginning and illness evolution, identifying the difficulty in recognizing and understanding AD; the suffering of the caretaker, that deals with the progression of AD and the growing complexity of care; and the confrontation of feelings that arise within the caretaker, for example, the fear, the anguish, the devotion and the hope. It was concluded that there is an overload of activities for the caretaker and that, in order to give a quality assistance, it is necessary to access information on the illness and have familiar, therapeutic and psychological supports.
