摘要：Neste artigo, partindo do exemplo Ndau de Moçambique, pretende-se compreender a importância do lugar social que as autoridades tradicionais detêm na actualidade e qual o seu papel no processo de formação do Estado ao nível distrital. Pretende-se demonstrar que, à semelhança do passado colonial, o Estado moçambicano tem procurado usar as autoridades tradicionais vaNdau em processos administrativos que se podem caracterizar como uma espécie de neo-indirect rule.
其他摘要：Using the example of the Ndau of Mozambique, this article seeks to interpret the significance of the social standing of traditional authorities in modern life and their role in state formation at the district level. It endeavours to show how, as in the colonial past, the Mozambican state has sought to use the traditional vaNdau authorities in administrative roles which can best be described as a kind of neo-indirect rule.
