Este artículo se centra en la noción de complejidad del grupo nominal, enfatizando su importancia como un marcador de estilo dentro del inglés periodístico en un corpus de titulares pertenecientes a los diarios nacionales británicos The Times, Daily Express y The Sun, con referencia especial a las noticias directas. La complejidad del grupo nominal se examina bajo el esquema teórico propuesto por Quirk et al. (1972, 1985). Sobre la base del análisis estructural del grupo nominal, me centro en la variación de los grupos nominales simples y complejos. De este modo, el objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar posibles diferencias entre los grupos nominales en los titulares verbales y nominales, y mostrar qué tipos de titulares se prefieren en los diferentes tipos de periódicos hasta el punto de ser significativo para la caracterización de la variedad de titulares mostrada por estos distintos periódicos

This article concentrates on the notion of complexity of the noun phrase, stressing its relevance as a style marker within newspaper English in a corpus of headlines from the British daily newspapers The Times, Daily Express and The Sun, with special reference to hard news stories. Noun phrase complexity is examined under the theoretical framework reported in Quirk et al. (1972, 1985). On the basis of structural analysis of noun phrases, I focus upon the variation of simple and complex noun phrases. In this way, the main aim of this work is to analyse possible differences between noun phrases in verbal and nominal headlines, and to show which types of headlines are preferred in which types of newspapers to an extent that is significant for the characterisation of the variety of headlines exhibited by these different newspapers
