La epidemia de SIDA constituye un importante reto para la supervivencia humana. Aunque en Cuba la prevalencia es inferior a 0,1 % en adultos, este problema es considerado una prioridad. El Grupo de Prevención del sida (GPSIDA) surgió con la intención de sumarse a la respuesta del Ministerio de Salud Pública a la lenta pero creciente epidemia. GPSIDA, integrado por seropositivos y seronegativos al VIH, realiza acciones encaminadas a educar a la población, evitar nuevas infecciones y apoyar a los infectados y sus familiares. Este trabajo se propuso documentar el desarrollo del grupo desde su fundación en 1991 hasta 2006, durante sus primeros 15 años. Se ha creado una infraestructura para los GPSIDA al nivel provincial y ha fortalecido la red de comunicación e intercambio. Hoy funcionan 16 GPSIDA en el país, que agrupan a más de 300 miembros y 500 colaboradores en la prevención de las ITS y VIH/SIDA.

AIDS epidemics is an important challenge to human survival. Although the prevalence in Cuba is below 0.1 % in adult people, this disease is a priority problem. The AIDS Prevention Group (known as GPSIDA in Cuba) was created to contribute to the response of the Ministry of Public Health to this slow but growing epidemic. GPSIDA, made up of HIV seropositive and seronegative people, carry out actions aimed at educating the population, avoiding new infections and supporting the infected people and their relatives. This paper was intended to document the development of the group since its inception in 1991 up to 2006, that is, its first 15 years of existence. An infrastructure for GPSIDA at provincial level has been built in addition to the strengthening of the communication and exchange network. There are at present 16 AIDS prevention groups in the country that group over 300 members and 500 collaborators working for the prevention of STI and HIV/AIDS.
