A crise financeira de 2008 quebrou a confiança depositada na capacidade de autorregulação dos mercados assim como na capacidade de decisão dos agentes económicos. Reconheceu-se, então, a necessidade de reforçar a regulação e supervisão do setor financeiro. No que concerne especificamente à proteção do consumidor de produtos financeiros assistimos a uma renovada aposta em iniciativas de educação financeira. O presente artigo analisa criticamente estas iniciativas. Embora tenham o mérito de reconhecer as dificuldades inerentes às decisões financeiras, o seu sucesso está seriamente comprometido pelo que se conhece sobre o comportamento e a influência do contexto socioeconómico sobre a situação financeira das famílias.

The financial crisis of 2008 questioned the belief on markets’ ability to regulate themselves, as well as on the decision-making ability of economic agents. The need to tighten the regulation and supervision of the financial sector became apparent. In what regards, specifically, the protection of the consumers of financial products, we observe a renewed interest on financial education initiatives. The present article critically analyses these initiatives. Even though the intrinsic difficulties of financial decisions are recognised, their success is seriously undermined by what is known about the behaviour and the role of the wider socioeconomic context on the financial situation of households.
