A arte contemporânea tem incorporado mudanças relevantes nas suas propriedades internas. Entre algumas dessas propriedades, este artigo irá abordar as asserções da arte como conceito e da arte como imagem. Nesse sentido, a análise de conteúdo de algumas das principais teses da arte conceitual e a análise do trabalho de Cindy Sherman fornecerão o terreno empírico para as asserções supramencionadas. Com efeito, este duplo processo de tornar vários aspectos da arte contemporânea em conceitos e/ou em imagens representa uma grande transformação no campo artístico. Ao mesmo tempo, a transformação interna referida no campo artístico também tem efeitos na relação entre esse mesmo campo artístico e a estrutura social global. No caso deste artigo, a relação entre o campo artístico e o capitalismo operada pela redefinição do princípio da "arte pela arte".

Contemporary art has absorbed fundamental changes into its internal conditions, including frameworks that approach art as a concept and as an image. This article examines the content of some of the principal theses of conceptual art, taking the work of Cindy Sherman as the empirical grounds for analyzing these frameworks. In fact this double of processing of turning various aspects of contemporary art into concepts and/or images represents a significant transformation in the artistic field. At the same time, the internal transformation seen in the artistic field also affects the relation between this same artistic field and the global social structure - in the case of this article, the relation between the artistic field and capitalism mobilized by the redefinition of the principle of "art for art's sake".
