Estudo descritivo do tipo transversal, objetivou identificar as Representações Sociais em torno da hipertensão e da terapêutica que contribuem para a adesão ou não de pacientes idosos ao tratamento da doença. Os dados foram coletados entre os meses de junho e setembro de 2010, por meio de entrevista realizada com99 idosos hipertensos, residentes em dois distritos rurais do município de Governador Valadares-MG. Para a avaliação da adesão fez-se uso do teste de Morisky-Green e para o levantamento das Representações Sociais da técnica de associação livre de palavras. O software EVOC possibilitou a identificação do núcleo da representação, sendo os elementos mais citados pelos participantes: Cefaléia, Coração, Derrame, Morte e Nervosismo. Conclui-se que as representações sociais que idosos possuem em relação à terapêutica influenciam os diferentes níveis de adesão ao tratamento. Além disso, elascondicionam a forma como os pacientes fazem uso de medicamentos e adotam as sugestões de cuidados para saúde.

This work is a cross-sectional descriptive study, aiming at identifying the Social Representations related with hypertension and the therapeutics that contribute to the adherence or nonadherence in its treatment of elderly patients. Data were collected between June and September 2010 through the interviews carried out with 99 hypertensive elderly residents in two rural districts of the city of Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais. The Morisky-Green test was used for the assessment of adherence and for the investigation of Social Representation in the technique of free association of words. EVOC software enabled the identification of the core of representation, and the elements most often cited by participants were: Headache, Heart, Stroke, Death, and nervousness. It was concluded that the social representations that the elderly have in relation to therapeutic influence the different levels of adherence to the treatment. In addition, these representations affect how patients use drugs and adopt the suggestions for health care.
