Se ha señalado (Tissol 2002: 305) que los lectores de Metamorphoses nos sorprendemos cuando en los últimos libros se despliega abundante material histórico. El final se resuelve por medio de sucesivos desvíos: de César a Augusto, y de él a Ovidio. La figura del princeps se reconstruye mediante recursos como la ironía, el juego intertextual y la ambigüedad. Al cabo, la inmortalidad terrena del poeta pesa más que la inmortalidad astral del príncipe. Este desenlace, que predice el reconocimiento popular a la empresa literaria de Ovidio, hace pensar que la eternidad por él alcanzada resultó más concreta y más firme.

It has been indicated (Tissol 2002: 305) that the readers of Metamorphoses are surprised when abundant historical material unfolds in the last books. The outcome shows successive deflections, from Caesar to Augustus, and then to Ovid. The princeps is reconstructed by means of procedures like irony, intertextual games and ambiguity. Ultimately, the terrestrial immortality of the poet weighs more than the astral immortality of the prince. This end, that predicts popular gratefulness to Ovid's work, makes us think that the eternity he reached was more solid and firmer.
