El Pastor de Hermas, uno de los libros más difundidos entre los cristianos después del Nuevo Testamento, olvidado y recuperado en su edición griega recién en el siglo XIX, se presenta como un apocalipsis. El contenido de la revelación no es sin embargo la victoria cósmica del fin de los tiempos sino la prolongación de la historia de salvación en la construcción de una sociedad interior a la sociedad del imperio romano: la "torre amurallada con una sola puerta de entrada", que salvaguardará el bien político de la concordia y la equidad frente a la codicia y el placer atribuidos a la sociedad pagana. El concepto de iglesia entonces es relacionado con la meta de la historia, y no tanto con la ruptura cósmica de una intervención celestial.

The Shepherd of Hermas is one of the most widely known Chistian books after the New Testament. Forgotten by centuries until its Greek edition was recovered in the 19th century, it reveals itself as an apocalypsis. The content of the revelation is not presented as the cosmic victory at the end of times but as the continuity of the salvation story in the heart of the Roman Empire: the Church is the "fortified tower with only one entrance door" which will protect the political value of goodwill and the equity from the greed and pleasure of pagan society. The concept of church is, then, more related to the aim of the history itself than to the cosmic rupture brought about by a heavenly intervention.
