  • 摘要:A r t and design edu ca tion in England is probably the m os t e thnocentr ic o f s ubject areas, being almost exc lusivel y ba s ed on a European Post Renaissance conc eption o f art . Pu pi l s ne ed to h a ve a 'co n ce p t o f c ul tu r e ' if t h ey ar e to be aware that their own activities a r e, t o a la rge extent , predetermined by t h e Ang lo -ce ntri c cu l t ure in which they l i ve . A l t ernati v e approa c h e s to studying the art and d e sign of cultures other than one ' s own are con s idered and a fram e work is developed for teaching a concept of c ulture. An international per s pective , rather t han a national pluralist perspective , is proposed as the basis for the s ele c tion of cultures . A practical example is described from a se c o n dary school pottery lesson in E n gl and where a c la y pot from Papua New Guinea is u s ed as a teaching aid. It is demonstrated that the o u t com es of a lesson of this type have much in c ommon with the de s ir e d outcomes of anti-racist e ducat i on . Although th e rationale is generalizable f or all schools there ar e s pe c ial implications, in t erms of teaching proc e dures and possible outcomes for schools which are multiracial and multicultural.
