摘要:Originally published in Glot International 6, 1, page 12-14, January 2002. The writer Italo Calvino was once asked to discuss the relationship between politics and art. He said that this relationship can be out of balance in two ways. It could be that politics does not take enough interest in art, and that is too bad for politics. Such, according to Calvino, was the tendency in the United States. On the other hand, politics could take too much interest in art, and that is too bad for art. This was the situation in the former Soviet Union. So in one type of imbalance the arts are free but ignored, and in the other the arts are accorded great importance but persecuted. The hard thing is to get just the right balance.
