Last year an American Jewish newspaper asked me for a linguist’s view of the biblical story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11: 1–9). Turning around the old joke about the Jew who, when asked to write an essay on elephants wrote on ‘The Elephant and the Jewish Question’, I proposed to discuss: Is the story of the Tower of Babel good for the linguists?
