摘要：In this paper both historical and morphological evidence are used to establish two conclusions of theoretical import for the study of the Vietnamese tone system: 1) tone (in the Hanoi dialect, at least) is derivative, i.e., it is not represented by underlying Hs and Ls as one might expect in a standard autosegmental account, but rather is the result of the interaction of an abstract laryngeal with different syllable structures, and 2) register must be considered as existing on a separate auto segmental tier from the abstract laryngeal.
