摘要:The inventory of Polish coronals is asymmetric: there are four stops, but only three fricatives. This paper examines how these stops and fricatives line up in phonological processes to form natural classes. Previous analyses of palatalisation have grouped the alveolar affricates /ts, dz/ with the other anterior segments /t, d, s, z/, assuming that phonological classes are determined by the phonetic characteristics of segments, rather than on their actual patterning. Evidence from consonant-vowel interactions, however, point to a different organisation. Our account proposes that /ts, dz/ should in fact be classified with the coronals traditionally labelled as “posterior”.
