摘要:From 1995 to 2003, B. Elan Dresher published a series of columns in Glot International which covered a diverse range of linguistics-related topics, including phonology, syntax and theoretical debates in the field. Dresher drew on ideas within and beyond linguistics, including concepts from such diverse fields as biology and music. Using humour, allegory and wit to explore his subjects, he created a series of commentaries that are both entertaining and insightful, often creating an enlightening snapshot of a point in time for those who have come to the field subsequent to when the columns were written. The issues of Glot in which these columns were originally published are now out of print, and thus we have gathered them into this volume, allowing the linguistic community to once again access them easily. We also present, for the first time, the original version of Invisible Laboratories, a version which was deemed to be too controversial at the time. Taken individually or as a whole series, these columns are an original and engaging take on linguistic themes, and we hope they will spark a new round of discussion among readers.
