摘要:It is generally agreed that classes of sounds that pattern together are typically definable in phonetic terms and common phonological processes often have a plausible phonetic origin. However, there is a great deal of disagreement in terms of the extent to which phonetics should be built into the phonological machinery or directly referenced by the phonological grammar. In this paper, I examine a few types of phenomena that bear on this issue and suggest how these cases could be handled by theories that adopt different views on the role of phonetics in phonology.
