摘要:This paper looks at the distribution and the semantics of Japanese wh-doublets, such as “nani-nani” (what-what) and “dare-dare” (who-who). It is shown that these items can only appear in closed quotations in the sense of Recanati 2000, 2001, and that semantically, they behave like indefinites that range over referring expressions. In order to describe this semantics in a modeltheoretic way, a mechanism that allows quantification over expressions (or ‘metalinguistic quantification’) is in need. We will propose a fragment that allows predication as well as quantification over expressions, which nicely captures the metalinguistic nature of natural language.
