摘要:Introduction. Greenlanders have a lower cardiovascular mortality than Danes, possibly due to a lower blood pressure (BP). However, 24-hour BP has never been measured in Greenlanders. Objective. to compare 24-hour BP between Greenlanders and Danes, and to analyse the influence of "arctic" food and life-style. Materials and Methods. 186 healthy subjects participated. 145 Greenlanders were categorized into three groups according to dietary habits and current place of residence. 41 Danes were included as controls. All subjects underwent physical examination and laboratory screening of blood and urine. Socio-cultural information was obtained by interview. 24-hour BP was measured. Results. 24-hour diastolic BP was lower among Greenlanders (122/69 mmHg, 95% CI: 119-124/68-70) than among Danes 123/75 (120-127/73-77). BP of male Greenlanders increased with age. BP did not change with diet. The difference between the two populations persisted after control for age, gender, BMI, out-door temperature, and lifestyle factors. Conclusion. Greenlanders have lower 24-hour diastolic BP and a higher pulse pressure. It is suggested that genetic factors are mainly responsible for the lower BP among Greenlanders, and it is hypothesized that a faster stiffening of the aorta may explain the higher pulse pressure.(Int J Circumpolar Health 2003; 62(4):447-447)
